About IDEA

IDEA Public Charter School in Washington, DC challenges, motivates, and strengthens the intellect of all of our students, whether they are pursuing paths to college or the workforce. Founded in 1997, IDEA is located in a state-of-the-art educational facility in historic Deanwood. In addition to rigorous core academics, IDEA offers robust career and technical education courses including construction and design, early childhood education, computer programming, environmental entrepreneurship, and more. Our athletic teams compete in the DC Public Charter School League and have won several championships. IDEA scholars have the opportunity to participate in a variety of extracurricular activities including beekeeping, cooking, gardening, Model United Nations, National Honor Society, peer mentoring, spoken word, student government, and more.

Our mission is to prepare students with academic, social, leadership, and occupational skills for post-secondary opportunities and to be responsible citizens who contribute to the community.

Our vision is to develop a results-driven learning environment that includes all stakeholders to refine practice through productive effort, collaboration, critical thinking, continuous growth, and reflection in order to prepare scholars for college and career opportunities.

Our growth equation motto is Growth = Reflection + Refinement + Effort

Our 2019-2020 priorities are

  • Students are at school.
  • Students are focused on their work.
  • The work is aligned to strong curriculum.
  • Reading interventions are in place for (new) students 2+ grade levels behind.
