Missing just two days of school a month places a student at risk of falling behind, failing classes, and potentially dropping out of school. Getting to school on time every day can be a game-changer for students, especially if they have struggled academically or have little support at home. IDEA takes attendance seriously and we are rolling out some new initiatives to ensure students are in class from bell to bell every day.
- We've added a new member to our attendance team--Nicole D'Angelo--who has experience in DC area public and public charter schools and expertise in improving attendance.
- Each grade level will be conducting competitions for best attendance, with rewards such as teachers cooking breakfast for their students.
- IDEA is participating in DC's citywide attendance program--Every Day Counts! The Every Day Counts website includes resources for students, families, and educators, including this guide for parents on how to help their children improve their attendance. This page includes information about how to solve the common problems that lead to children missing school.
- We will be sending home timely reminders to parents of IDEA's attendance policy and consequences for violating it when scholars are tardy or absent.
