Gaming Club Learns Programming Skills and Competes in eSports

DC nonprofit TAG Labs continues to engage and inspire IDEA scholars during our weekly video game programming club.

Scholars are learning the principles of programming through an accessible system that teaches a new core competency every week and requires scholars to demonstrate and build on their knowledge.

Core competencies learned in this module include
  • Sprits (Game Objects)
  • Behaviors
  • Event Sheets
  • Tilemaps
  • Layers
  • X and Y Coordinates
  • Collisions
  • Path Finding
  • Instance Variables
  • Global Variables
  • Boolean Variables
  • Frames
  • Principals of Animation
  • Keyboard Listeners

The Gaming Club was also given a few complimentary tickets to attend the Red Bull Esports tournament at DC's new Sports and Entertainment Arena compliments of Events DC. "This was a great way to kick off the club's own internal Esports tournament," said TAG Labs President Kreston Shirley. The club held a five-week tournament.
