ACAD scholars and JROTC cadets were on hand with DC Department of Housing and Community Development Director Polly Donaldson to unveil the DCHCD Vacant to Vibrant Initiative/Tiny House Living Demonstration on September 24 at 1109 50th Place Northeast in Washington, DC.
IDEA’s own Academy of Construction and Design scholars gave tours of both the Micro Cottage and the Minim House, the two tiny homes they built. Both houses are on display through November. Director Donaldson talked about how small houses like these can fit into the DC housing landscape. Scholar Karlton Carroll shared his experience as an ACAD intern, and Makiya Johnson, Kyeon Ford, James Gant, Tyron Gross shared building best practices and green elements as attendees toured the houses.
JROTC cadets, under the leadership of 1Sgt Davis, presented the colors and Cadets Michael Artemus and Justin Davis shielded the speakers from the rain by standing at the podium with an umbrella. They also lent a hand wherever needed to include assisting attendees up and down the wet stairs to the houses.
Scholars who participated in the Vacant to Vibrant celebration included Karlton Carroll, Kyeon Ford, Makiya Johnson, Tyron Gross, James Gant, Da’Nay Barnes, Franks Johnson, Markel Robinson, Darrien Ruth, Tonya Bell, Malek Bussey, Jaquan Downing, Earnest Hooks, Jarrett Hopkins, Jaelin Jones, Camren McClean, Bryan Ramirez Marquez, Malaysia Johnson, Giovanni Greene, Nathaniel Wills, Michael Artemus, Diamonti Johnson, and Jaylen Gross.
