STUDENT VOICES: Renikka Explains Why She Joined New Orleans and Back

Hello, my name is Renikka, I am a 10th grader at IDEA Public Charter School. I have gotten the opportunity to be a part of the New Orleans And Back Program! It has been nothing but a pleasure to be a part of something so great. Do you wonder what New Orleans And Back is? Why be a part of something like this?

Well here’s the answer to your question. New Orleans And Back is a program that is primarily focused on youth service in DC. It allows leaders to empower visionary education and EXCELLENCE. New Orleans And Back is a program through which high school students develop leadership skills by conducting community projects.

My first day of New Orleans And Back was the day I knew I was going to LOVE it! We watched a video of how New Orleans And Back came about, and mentees and mentors shared their experiences with us.

We meet several Saturdays a month to achieve different activities with mentees and mentors. One Saturday we split up into different groups working with many different people to get to know them really well. I mean it’s always nice to meet new people, right? I THOUGHT SO! We competed with groups at different tables to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to give to the homeless. We also worked on a sketch drawing of any Black leader of our choice. We played team building games.

Another Saturday we came together again with 12 marvelous IDEA students and another 12 students from other high schools in DC and 7 program alumni who showed up and worked really hard. We worked in teams to basically tell what we think empowerment, leadership, entrepreneurship, advocacy, and community mean and give examples of what they look like and mean to us.
