Fifteen Academy of Construction and Design students will begin construction industry internships in January, as a continuation of their skilled trades education at IDEA. Junior and senior interns will be placed with DC Student Construction Foundation member companies, including Miller and Long, and matched with supervisors at each company.
Interns will complete required job site training, including CPR and first aid, before they begin any actual construction. The first task for interns will be completing ACAD's Minim House, said ACAD Director Shelly Karriem. After that's done, students will break ground on the site of a new house at 50th Street NE and East Capitol Street NE. What's currently an empty lot will soon feature a single family home, designed by GTM architects and built by ACAD students and their internship partners. Proceeds from the eventual sale of the house will be reinvested in ACAD and DC Student Construction Trade Foundation programs.
