For the first time, IDEA is offering a semester classroom course in driver’s education for scholars old enough to earn their driver’s licenses. New social studies teacher Michael Cummings, also an experienced driver’s education instructor, is teaching the class. Cummings is pursuing the certification required to teach the behind the wheel section of driver’s education. IDEA is also seeking a specially equipped training car in order to offer behind the wheel.
Cummings also teaches World History I and II and English I. He comes to IDEA from Fairfax County Public Schools, and has previously taught at another DC charter school and with Job Corps, a career-focused program for students up to age 21. Outside the classroom, Cummings is an avid outdoorsman and plays percussion. He played in his high school and college marching bands. This year at IDEA he is teaching IDEA’s drumline, which meets weekly during advisory period.
