Peer Leaders Reach out to Unhoused District Residents

Thousands of unhoused individuals in the District struggle not only to find a safe place to sleep at night, but as a result also lack reliable access to hygiene supplies and food. So 11 IDEA scholars who participate in the school's Peer Group Connection program walked around the city on September 11 to help out a few folks they saw along the way.
Kenia Smith, Nicholas Bullock, Desteny Cole, J'La Williams, Zion Harris, Mariah Delbe, Shania Jordan, DeJah Robinson, Nadiya Moore, Da'Nay Barnes, and A'Liya Titus joined staff members Lori Briscoe and Yvette Brown in assembling ziplock bags containing hand sanitizer, bath wipes, granola bars, chips, water, and mini pads for women.
The group walked down Florida Avenue and around Union Station, where many unhoused people have set up encampments. "We also made random stops on the way as we saw folks sitting or walking who appeared to be in need of a warm gesture," explained Ms. Briscoe.
Peer Group Connection peer leaders work to help their fellow scholars, resolve conflicts, and serve the community.
