A Message from Principal McCrae

We are excited to now be welcoming scholars into the IDEA school building five days a week. The opportunity to learn on campus is available to every IDEA scholar. In order to ensure admittance, scholars are required to sign up here in advance. IDEA faculty and staff are in the building daily to assist with scholars’ virtual learning needs.

End-of-Year Assessments

As the school year comes to a close, we are administering the MAP test to all scholars to measure their progress in reading and math over the course of the year. MAP test results are a part of scholars’ fourth quarter grades, and are mandatory. Please encourage your scholar to try their best to complete this virtual diagnostic test. The MAP test will allow for IDEA to determine your child’s areas of growth and regression on their literacy and mathematical skills.

Timberwolf Appreciation

During this month of May, we celebrated IDEA Staff Appreciation Week. IDEA showed our gratitude to our incredible, hardworking staff with a variety of treats and activities. Our appreciation included delicious tacos from Little Miner Taco Truck, tasty sweet treats, an exclusive comedy performance via zoom by teacher-turned-comedian Eddie B.and a cozy bonfire for staff including s’mores, games, and live music. IDEA scholars shared heartfelt thank you notes acknowledging  our staff for their tireless efforts that have been displayed throughout this unprecedented year!

The Class of 2021 will be treated to A Masquerade Under the Stars, a COVID-safe senior prom extravaganza on June 4 from 7pm to 11pm. All scholars attending will be required to show proof of vaccination and/or negative Covid test results for this event. Attendees will make a grand entrance and be escorted to an elegantly decorated tent on the IDEA field. We will serve a three-course catered dinner while a DJ spins the latest tunes. The evening continues with an awards show and the crowning of prom king and queen. A photo booth full of fun props and a professional photographer will help seniors capture lasting memories. This will be a memorable event for the Class of 2021!

Scholars must register to attend, but there is no cost for the event. Parent volunteers are welcome to chaperone! Please reach out to Ms. Ghebritensae at for more details.

We will celebrate the remarkable achievements of our seniors during our graduation ceremony, to be held in person on the IDEA field on June 11 at 11am. While following all CDC guidelines, scholars will walk across the stage to receive their diplomas, and selected scholars will receive special awards. We look forward to celebrating with our scholars and families for this momentous occasion. Ticket details and information will be provided in our senior family town hall session on Thursday, May 15 at 6pm. You may also contact Dean Briscoe at and or Ms. Ghebritensae at for more details.

Summer School

Recognizing that this year has been extraordinarily challenging for all of us, IDEA is providing ample opportunities for scholars to finish their learning by completing their credits during summer school. Summer school will be held June 28 through July 30, Mondays through Thursdays (no school on Fridays!) from 9am - 4:30pm. Catered breakfast and lunch will be provided daily for participants.

In addition to our summer school offering, IDEA’s clinical staff will be offering a variety of activities during the month of July to promote positive mental health and wellness, helping scholars to deal with the challenges of emerging from a pandemic year and transitioning to a new normal. Stay tuned for more information about social and emotional health activities this summer.

Summer Employment at IDEA

This year we are excited to offer our Career and Technical Education scholars the opportunity to advance their skills with summer internships. Our construction technology students will be designing and building an outdoor classroom that will be used by scholars in the fall. In child development, scholars will be deepening their skills and developing the portfolio for their CDA credential. And our computer science scholars will build mobile apps through our partnership with Apple.

We are in the final stages of submitting IDEA’s self-study report to the Middle States Accreditation Commission. Our final reaccreditation committee session will be Tuesday, June 8 at 4pm, where we will announce opportunities for members of the community to participate in focus groups. Even if you weren’t able to be a part of our committees, your voice is needed in any of our focus groups to help shape IDEA’s future!

School Year 2021-2022 Calendar

IDEA has published the draft calendar for the 2021-2022 school year. This calendar follows the DC Public Schools proposed calendar. Please keep in mind that the calendar is subject to change in case of major changes in COVID circumstances. We are excited to pilot a new weekly twilight school program from 5pm to 7pm to provide additional opportunities for scholars to enhance and expand learning after this year’s challenges.
