As the end of the year approaches, we hope that all of us will be able to take the opportunity to reflect, rest, and find renewal. 2020 has been an extraordinarily challenging year for our community and our country, and we know how important it is for our mental and emotional health to take a collective breath before we re-emerge in 2021. We are resilient and confident that we will continue to persevere through whatever comes our way, as long as we’re together.
What makes our resilience possible is the strong relationships that IDEA teachers and staff have with our scholars and their families. Especially this year, when parent support has never been so critical for student success, we appreciate our parents for their engagement and attentiveness to their scholars’ academic journeys. We honor our parents for their continued sacrifices and commitment. We honor our scholars for continuing to show up and work hard, even when it’s difficult. Parents, please keep in mind that we have resources for you on our website and an easy way for you to ask questions and make suggestions through our Padlet link. We still need your enhanced support with monitoring your scholar’s academic progress as the first semester is drawing to a close in January.
Even though it’s almost winter break, it’s important to make sure scholars are staying engaged with their schoolwork. We ask that families please check in with scholars to ask how they’re doing, find out what assignments they’re working on, and see if they need any help from teachers. Please review with scholars the Five by Five daily attendance measures. Note when progress reports are mailed so you can check on your scholars’ grades. You may also create a Canvas observer account so you can access scholars’ assignments and progress regularly. All scholars receive two grades in every class every Friday. You can find instructions on creating a Canvas observer account on pages 8 and 9 of this Town Hall presentation.
It’s those relationships that make IDEA a strong, welcoming, supportive community, and why students and parents keep coming back to IDEA. The MySchoolDC lottery opened December 14, officially kicking off application and re-enrollment season for DC public and public charter schools. We encourage current students to re-enroll as soon as possible to secure your seat for next school year, and invite you to tell friends and family who are looking for a great high school about IDEA. Learn more about applying to or re-enrolling at IDEA on our Admissions page.
While we have already successfully welcomed some scholars into the building since October, (following all recommended health and safety guidelines), we hope to have more scholars back in the classroom as soon as we can safely do so. In order to determine our schedule and requirements for reopening, we need input from scholars and parents. Click here to learn more about our Reopening Committee and sign up to join us if you’re interested. Our first meeting will be on Thursday, December 17 at 4 pm.
We also want to include scholar and parent voices as we chart IDEA’s course for the next five years as part of our reaccreditation process. The Reaccreditation Committee meets online every other month. To learn more or to sign up to join us, click here.
Finally, we thank all IDEA stakeholders--scholars, staff, and partners--for all being a part of our mission and we value you for being connected to our scholars. Therefore, stay on the lookout for a small token of our appreciation in this holiday season!
Remember IDEA will be closed December 23 through January 1. All of us at IDEA wish you and yours a wonderful winter break.
