I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the Class of 2020 on their graduation last Friday. This group of scholars has demonstrated fierce determination and remarkable resilience throughout an extraordinary school year filled with unexpected challenges. I have said before but I want to say again how proud all of us at IDEA are of our scholars for persevering through adversity and how grateful we are to all of our scholars’ families for supporting them throughout high school and especially over the past few months. I also want to recognize our staff for going the extra mile, as always, to help our scholars succeed. Our IDEA family is a strong one, and I am honored to be part of it.
Even though we just celebrated graduation, we continue to work hard to help scholars finish the year strong, through our extended school year. We are giving scholars who need it the opportunity to refocus on challenging areas and recover credits for classes they did not pass during the regular school year. Scholars enrolled in credit recovery have until June 26 to complete course requirements for credit consideration. Our 2020-2021 school year calendar is available now so you can get a head start on planning for the fall!
This week we are excited to launch IDEA’s Summer Jobs Program, which will operate from June 22 through July 31, providing 55 IDEA scholars with paid internships. Through a partnership with the Marion Barry Summer Youth Employment Program, we will host online internships in four disciplines: computer science, leadership, career preparedness, and child development. I invite you to learn more about our Summer Jobs Program here.
Understanding that the public health, economic, and racial justice crises we are currently experiencing can have significant effects on the physical and mental health of our scholars, our
dedicated clinical staff remains available to support scholars throughout the summer. If your scholar needs assistance, please contact our Director of Student Support Services Melody Washington at email@example.com or 202.399.4750.
TOWN HALL MEETINGS
IDEA will also continue to hold our weekly online town hall meetings on Thursdays at 6pm to sustain and build our wonderful community. All IDEA scholars and families are welcome to attend via Zoom. This is a great opportunity for scholars and families to ask questions and share resources. You can review summaries of past town hall meetings here. Parents, remember that IDEA is offering a $100 e-card incentive when you bring two non-senior parents to an IDEA town hall and introduce them to our virtual community! We value parent voices and want to hear from everyone!
NEW SCHOLARS WELCOME!
We still have seats available for the 2020-2021 school year! IDEA is eager to welcome new scholars in 9th, 10th, and 11th grades to join the Timberwolf pack! Current and former IDEA families are the best source of referrals for new scholars. Please encourage your friends, family members, and neighbors to consider IDEA for high school this fall. Thanks to our expanded career and technical education program, every IDEA scholar will graduate with a personalized career plan, prepared to pursue a future of their choosing and ready to succeed in life. Learn more about our CTE offerings here. Don’t forget that scholars can receive $250 for referring a new scholar to IDEA. If you have questions about our referral program, please contact Tracey Eichelberger at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We hope that you enjoy your summer. Know that we are still working every day to make IDEA the best possible learning environment for our scholars. We always welcome your suggestions and feedback. Please contact us at any time.
