Karlton "Karter" Carroll Jr.
Karlton Carroll contributed to the IDEA and Deanwood communities by building modern micro homes and raised garden beds through his classes in IDEA’s Academy of Construction and Design, planning events for neighborhood kids through the Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program, and participating in community cleanups.
He earned construction industry certifications, National Society of High School Scholars Awards, and certificate of excellence awards from IDEA. Karlton is an intern in DC’s Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO), where he is learning computer languages and coding skills to help him prepare for college.
Karlton’s favorite classes at IDEA were his math classes because he loves numbers and solving problems. He also played on IDEA’s varsity basketball team. After graduation, Karlton will attend Norfolk State University, where he plans to study computer science with the goal of creating a business to design software for kids around the world. He will continue his basketball career on the college level and hopes to one day play in the NBA or overseas.
Karlton’s advice is to “complete what people thought was impossible.” He would like to thank his family and friends for encouraging him to work hard.
