Shakespeare Wrote about the Same Problems We Have Today, Scholars Learned

All semester, seniors in Terence Sheehan’s English class have been reading, rehearsing, living, and breathing Shakespeare. As part of a program called Text Alive! offered by the Shakespeare Theatre Company, educators and actors well-versed in Shakespeare have visited Mr. Sheehan’s class several times and scholars have been preparing a scene from Richard III set in modern-day DC.

“The theme of the scene is how betrayal brings out demons from the past,” explained Mr. Sheehan. “Scholars have realized that Shakespeare was writing about many of the same social conflicts and shady behavior that is part of today’s real world. Since they understand what the play is about, they’ve learned how to speak Shakespeare’s language with emotional fluency.”

Scholars memorized lines, created blocking, made costumes, and designed the sound for their scene, which they performed before an audience of students and teachers from 12 other area high schools on May 11 at Sidney Harman Hall in DC. Later, scholars enjoyed seeing the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s own production of Richard III in a matinee performance offered exclusively to Text Alive! participants who had studied the play and performed their own scenes.
