Meet Bill Stevens

A history teacher should provide students the opportunity to use history in the present as a tool to address the injustices of the past. Mr. Stevens always enjoyed being both a student and teacher of history, but it wasn’t until several great professors he had for graduate school at Catholic University that he realized how important it is for a teacher to teach their students how to interpret history as a way to make history personally relevant to their current situation. Over the past 20 years of his career, the best moments in Mr. Stevens classroom have been when the students have used history to better understand and address the injustices of the past. Or as historian Howard Zinn said, “The most revolutionary act someone can engage in is...to tell the truth [about the past].”
