Marecya Burton was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota into a family of educators. Her mother taught reading and language arts and her father taught social studies. Ms. Burton did not plan to follow in their footsteps, but instead applied to law school, but heard about a teaching job in Baltimore and decided to apply. She’s been teaching social studies ever since, first in Baltimore City Public Schools and then at Coppin Academy High School. Ms. Burton loves bringing energy and enthusiasm to her classroom, inspired in part by her own eighth grade social studies teacher, Mr. Hall, who engaged her in spirited debates and with whom she is still in touch. Ms. Burton uses a variety of techniques to keep scholars interested, like acting out scenes from history; demonstrating how history is relevant to their lives today; and inviting scholars to teach lessons using the media they love, such as rap, art, or writing.
