IDEA Public Charter School is a technology-focused, college preparatory secondary school in Washington, DC serving 300 students in grades 9-12. The school, located in a state-of-the-art educational facility in the historic Deanwood community, has been educating youth since 1997. The mission of IDEA Public Charter School is to prepare students with the academic, social, leadership, and occupational skills for post-secondary opportunities and to be responsible citizens who contribute to the community. The school is an academically rigorous and demanding institution dedicated to improving the educational opportunities of students. IDEA Public Charter School creates an environment that fosters critical thinking and problem solving by combining rigorous academics designed to prepare students for college; innovative, hands-on technology, and vocational training for practical knowledge or pursuit of a career in technology or trades; and leadership, discipline, and structure of JROTC for character development and enrichment or to prepare for a career in military service.

Vice Principal of Culture


The vice principal of school culture is expected to fulfill the following responsibilities in these areas.

School Culture

  • Partner with principal to promote and foster environment of accountability for student achievement and culture of excellence
  • Partner with principal and academic leads (instructional coaches/special education coordinator, et. al.) to ensure consistent discipline and reward practices
  • Partner with principal to design, facilitate, and monitor discipline policy, procedure, and implementation.
  • Coordinate and lead high school placement needs
  • Develop, monitor, evaluate, and coordinate behavior contracts for students.
  • Partner with principal and academic and clinical team to develop, monitor, evaluate, and coordinate student intervention.
  • Coordinate parent and community involvement initiatives with Home School Association (PTA)
  • Complete other duties as assigned by principal

Student Achievement

  • Partner with principal to create and maintain data-driven environment and analyze student outcomes to target initiatives
  • Assist with design and execution of the school’s strategic plan relative to students’ performance, attendance, interventions, promotion rates, and assessments (MAP/ANET/PARCC and others)

Leadership/ Supervision

  • Support principal and academic leads to ensure curriculum, instruction, and assessment align with Common Core Standards, school curriculum, and school performance plan.
  • Partner with principal to design and facilitate professional development programming
  • Observe teacher practice/evaluate teacher performance; provide substantive and meaningful feedback relative to school culture, climate, and student achievement via iObservation
  • Directly support, supervise, and evaluate staff that foster a climate of high expectations
  • Promote a positive environment (positive interactions with colleagues, students, and parents) that supports student learning
  • Exemplify and promote necessary sense of urgency relative to student growth and success
  • Serve as subject matter expert relative to teaching, learning, and classroom culture and climate.
  • Assist with hiring and retaining high quality faculty and staff
  • Complete other duties as assigned by principal

Professional requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree; master’s degree preferred
  • 5+ years teaching experience
  • 2+ years administrative and/or teacher leader experience preferred
  • Extensive knowledge of effective instructional pedagogies
  • Demonstrated success in a mentoring/coaching capacity
  • Commitment to process improvement and excellence
  • Prior academic leadership experience preferred
  • Results driven
  • Superior knowledge of business software applications (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Docs)
